The HMM-363 Command Chronology for 12 May 1967 contains the following incident report:

"At approximately 1700H, YZ-78 suffered a direct hit by enemy mortar fire shortly after lifting from a landing zone at YD 117692. The aircraft crashed and burned killing the pilot and crew chief and injuring the co-pilot and aerial gunner."

The report refers to UH-34D BuNo 147190 which was conducting a fuel resupply mission to a landing zone at Con Thien. The LZ came under attack by rocket fire as the aircraft finished off-loading 55 gallon fuel drums. The UH-34 lifted off in a southeasterly direction, but had attained only about 100 feet in aitude before it was hit in the port fuselage by a rocket. The aircraft crashed and burned about 80 meters distant from the LZ. The enemy gunners shifted their aim to the crash site, firing approximately 30 more rockets. As noted by LZ personnel, casuaies would have been much higher had those rockets impacted within the LZ rather than 80 meters distant.

Two men died in the crash, ain Richard L. Basinger (pilot) and Corporal John W. Jackson (crew chief); the copilot, George Hadzewycz, and the door gunner, Ronald Hartline, survived with injuries.

• Named after the Brig. General who was the first commanding officer of the second division of the First Corps. The August 13, 1898 Army and Navy Journal reported that Poland died August 8 at Asheville, North Carolina of fever contracted at Chickamauga. He is buried at Westerly, R.I.
• This camp was established because of the overcrowding at Camp Thomas. General McKee and the second division of the First Corps moved from Camp Thomas to Camp Poland beginning about August 22, 1898. The new camp was named Camp Poland about August 21, 1898. The camp was abandoned in early January, 1899 except for the hospital at Turner Park, which stayed open until mid-February, 1899.
• The regiments at Camp Poland began leaving as early as mid-September, 1898. By December, only two regiments were left in camp. The 6th Ohio left in late December on its way to Cuba. The 31st Mich. left January 9, 1899 for Savannah and uimately on to Cuba.
• Part of the camp was located near the site of Camp Wilder. The front page of the August 30, 1898 Knoxville Sentinel has a map of the initial configuration of troops at Camp Poland. The division headquarters and first brigade were camped near the site of Camp Wilder. The third brigade was camped to the north at Lonsdale, northwest of the railroad shops, and the second brigade was camped just south of Lincoln Park, northwest of Broadway Street. The division hospital was at Turner Park, east of the second brigade’s camp. Turner Park was east of Broadway at about Cecil Avenue. The grandstand was used as a hospital building. The 4th Tenn. camp became a part of Camp Poland. The brigade camps were all within one to one and one-half miles of each other. Regiments moved to some other locations including Glenwood after the initial camps were established.
• According to the August 20, 1898 Knoxville Sentinel, the first brigade camp was at the rear of the Brookside cotton mill and east of the site of Camp Wilder.
• Ahough Knoxville city officials tried to have the division remain there, the army was reorganized in early October

USS MEREDITH was an ALLEN M. SUMNER - class destroyer and the third ship in the Navy to bear the name. After only about 3 months of service, the MEREDITH was lost in the invasion of Normandy after striking a mine and an enemy bombing raid one day later. 35 crew members were lost with the ship. On 5 August 1960, the sunken hulk was sold to St. Française de Recherches of France. The hulk of the MEREDITH was raised and scrapped in September 1960.

370KennedyArmelWWIIJan 2, 1916Mar 18, 1942DNB295 S. McClure Road Lima, OhioCarnegie Cemetery Carnegie OklahomaLieut. Armel J. Kenedy, former Carnegie boy, was killed about noon Wednesday when his plane crashed and burned about six miles west of Lima, Ohio. three other officers were killed and their planes burned at the same time and within a short distance of each other. All were members of the U.S. Army Air Corps Ferry Command and were on a ferry trip, it was understood.
Army Air Corps officers could give no explanation of the accidents except the weather and it is reported the crashes occurred when the pilots flew into a blinding snow storm. According to information furnished The Herald from the news room of the Daily Oklahoman, a farmer saw one plane fall on his farm and burst into flames, two other fell 100 yards apart a half mile east of his farm and the fourth plane landed in a woods a mile south and also burst into flames.
Besides Lieut. Kennedy, the other pilots were Edward H. Saunders, Lake Valley, Ark.; Eugene H. Anderson, Kewanee, Ill., and Earl A. Houser, Pesotum, Ill.
Kennedy graduated from the Army Advanced Flying school at Stockton, Calif. January 9. He visited his mother, Mrs. E.C. Kennedy in Oklahoma City the following week.
