PVT Josiah Kesler

179th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Enlisted September 24, 1864

He died in the service of his country at the Post Hospital -at Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, of typhoid fever on 26 Jan 1865. He is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Elida, Allen Co., Ohio.

On 4 May 1856 he married Susannah Stemen in Allen Co., Ohio. Susannah was born 14 Jan 1839 at Fairfield Co., Ohio. Susannah died 22 Jun 1927 at Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, and is buried there.

Soon after marriage they moved to Jackson twp, Van Wert Co., Ohio, where Josiah cleared 40 acres. On 24 Sep 1864 Josiah went to Lima and enlisted in the Union Army. He gave his age as 29 and stated he was born in Allen Co. He listed his occupation as a farmer. He had gray eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion. He gave his height as 5'6". He received a $100 bounty for enlisting. By the 28th he was at Camp Chase, Ohio, and was assigned to Co. H, 179th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. He died in the service of his country at the Post Hospital at Nashville, Tennessee, of typhoid fever on 26 Jan 1865. His wife Susannah Kesler received a widow's pension #95134.
